영국 가디언 등 외신의 최근 보도에 따르면 이날 오전 5시 15분 경 멕시코 유카탄 반도 인근 캄페체 만의 바다 속을 지나는 수중 가스관에서 가스가 유출되며 火災가 발생했다. 불이 난 곳은 하루에 평균 70만 배럴(약 11억 1000만 리터) 이상의 원유를 생산하는 유전에서 얼마 떨어지지 않은 지점. 가디언 보도에 따르면 멕시코 국영 석유회사인 페멕스(PEMES)는 “火災 발생 약 5시간 후인 오전 10시 30분 경 불이 완전히 진압됐으며 부상자는 발생하지 않았다”고 밝혔다.

Flames are burning in the open sea like the boiling of lava. It may be like a scene out of a movie but it was an actual event that happened two days ago (local time), the site where the fire occurred being a sea near Mexico’s southeast Yucatan Peninsula.

The UK Guardian and foreign press most recently reported that at 5:15am that day, a passing underwater gas pipe leaked gas into the Gulf of Campeche, causing the fire near Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The site of the fire was not too far from an oil field that produces an average of over 700,000 barrels (approx. 1.11 billion litres) of crude oil daily. The Guardian reported that Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex (PEMES) stated that “the fire was extinguished at around 10:30am, ~5 hours after the fire started, and noone was injured”.
